Accommodation and Facilities
Sambar Deer are available wild and free in Victoria
from April until October each year and wild and free in New Zealand.
They
are also available in a large game ranch in the South Australia from
May until September.
Sambar Deer are big, tough and secretive and very difficult to hunt
in Victoria's remote mountains. The hunting terrain is often steep,
heavily wooded hillsides. You will require good hunting skills and be
physically capable.
For our Victorian hunt, our guide will meet our hunters at Melbourne
and drive them to the Sambar Deer Hunting area, in Victoria's alpine
forests. In New Zealand, you will be met at Taupo and driven to the
hunt area.

Hunting Method
Hunting in Victoria is by camping out in the bush with the deer, in
fly camps with sparse facilities, then hunting on foot all day from
dawn until dark in generally steep mountainous conditions. In New Zealand,
we hunt similar areas close to town facilities.
Hunting in the Game Ranch in South Australia is by driving to selected
locations, then by walking the rolling hill country, glassing then stalking
the game.

Equipment
It is recommended that our hunters bring a heavy calibre rifle, minimum
of 300 Mag or 338, whichever gun they can shoot well. Premium grade
ammunition and accurate shooting are called for when Sambar hunting.
In Victoria the most suitable clothing would be what you would wear
in the mountains in North America in late autumn (fall). Boots should
be well broken-in mountain hunting boots with full depth vibram soles.
Good
quality binoculars are necessary in each of these areas.

Weather
Conditions
In Victoria the weather is always cold in the high country with heavy
snow in winter.
